Brewers option SS Orlando Arcia to Triple-A, recall RHP Aaron Wilkerson

The Milwaukee Brewers optioned struggling shortstop Orlando Arcia to Triple-A Colorado Springs before Sunday’s series finale against the Reds.

The 29-year-old Wilkerson pitched in three games for the Brewers in September 2017, going 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA. This is his first appearance with Milwaukee this season.

The Patriots had signed Gillislee to a two-year, $6.4 million offer sheet as a restricted free agent last offseason, and he opened 2017 as the No. 1 option on the depth chart before losing the job to Dion Lewis in Week 6. The Patriots’ locks at running back this season are Rex Burkhead, James White and first-round pick Sony Michel, and the Patriots wouldn’t have any dead money on their salary cap if they release Gillislee. He is scheduled to earn $1.9 million in base salary and count $2.1 million against the salary cap. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s not on the roster.

Kanter, who has also played for the Jazz and Thunder, could still be traded by the Knicks after signing his option, but that doesn’t appear likely.

NBA free agency rumors: Mavs all-in on DeAndre Jordan; Cavs keeping Rodney Hood?

After commissioner Rob Manfred’s comment last week, mlbtraderumors.com ran a fan poll. I would have thought that site’s readership would lean to the analytical side of things, but the results were a virtual dead heat. When I looked around for other polls, I found similar splits. In general, it seems as if there is a slight lean toward no DH, but fans of AL teams prefer to keep it, and NL fans very much don’t want to adopt it.

Musgrove draws a Diamondbacks club that’s one of the worst in baseball against right-handed pitching

Joe Musgrove (R), rostered in 37 percent of ESPN leagues, Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Arizona Diamondbacks: Since returning from the disabled list, Musgrove owns a 3.68 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over five starts, showing pinpoint control (1.8 BB/9) and whiffing nearly a batter per inning (8.9 K/9). What’s most encouraging, however, is that his velocity (93.2 mph) is actually up slightly from 2017 (92.9 mph), which is no small thing considering he missed the first two months of the season as he recovered from a shoulder injury. On Saturday, Musgrove draws a Diamondbacks club that’s one of the worst in baseball against right-handed pitching, sporting an 80 wRC+ that ranks 29th in MLB and a 25.3 percent strikeout rate that ranks 28th.

Andrew Suarez (L), 5 percent, San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres: While Suarez’s 4.70 ERA in 11 starts is an eyesore, the underlying numbers suggest he deserves some attention. The lefty’s 3.58 FIP, 3.28 xFIP, and 63.7 LOB% tell us he’s had some bad fortune, while his 4.8 K/BB ratio ranks top-10 in the National League (minimum 50 IP). Plus, the results have begun to improve in June, with a 3.18 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over four starts. Suarez is a good bet to continue trending in the right direction on Saturday against the Padres, who struggle against left-handed pitching (91 wRC+, 25.1 K%).

Wilmer Font will serve as the Rays’ opener on Saturday in another bullpen game. The right-hander has fared well his past couple of times out, tossing eight innings of one-run ball across two appearances. Against the Yankees, however, there’s no reason to roll the dice here.

Before going any further with this, a quick shout-out to Ray Lewis, Randy Moss, Brian Urlacher, Brian Dawkins, Robert Brazile, Jerry Kramer and Bobby Beathard. Here’s to the notion that the absence of T.O. won’t detract one bit from the ultimate career-capping moment for the other members of the Class of 2018.

The show will go on. The Hall is bigger than any one person. And there are thousands of former players — like Everson Walls, Karl Mecklenburg and Joe Jacoby, well-credentialed finalists who didn’t get in last year — who have their own place in football history and would be honored to give an induction speech.

Yet if Owens, elected in his third year of eligibility, is sending a payback message because of his delayed entry, he’s got that ass-backward. Instead, this comes off as so selfish.

MLB trade rumors: How Padres’ Brad Hand could be season-changing Phillies trade target

When the Phillies arrived for spring training, a new mantra was enacted: Be Bold.

So far, so good on the hope from the team’s new manager, Gabe Kapler. At 38-33, the Phillies sit just one game out of a playoff spot and will send Jake Arrieta to the mound on Wednesday with an eye on win No. 39. Last year, the Phillies didn’t win their 39th game until the final day of July.

But if the Phillies are going to truly make a run at a postseason spot this summer, upgrades will be needed. That’s especially the case in a bullpen that’s sprung leaks around stud rookie fireman Seranthony Dominguez.

Hand closing and Dominguez in his current fireman role? No dedicated closer but rather a dominant lefty-righty tandem that’s flanked by pros like Tommy Hunter and Pat Neshek? Anything could go, and benefit the Phillies bullpen.

Long-term security : Hand is under team control from 2018-2020 (including an option year for the 2020 season) at just over $24.5M. For a pitcher of this caliber, it’s a steal of a contract.

I think they’re scared, Mannix said on the Yahoo Sports NBA podcast. I think they’re scared and should be scared to some degree of Kyrie Irving walking in 2019. I know he had a great year, but you know there are people in Cleveland that will tell you that the Knicks should be considered a real threat for Kyrie Irving. Because Kyrie had talked about it, about playing with the Knicks with some players in that Cleveland locker room from what I was told.

You know things can change. Obviously, you go to Boston and you become the face of the franchise. You’re on a winning team. Maybe the mindset has changed significantly?

While all of this is still a full year away, it could have an impact on how business goes down this offseason with both the Celtics and Knicks.

-Boston could choose to move on from Irving this summer, trading the star guard one year after landing him from the Cavaliers. Perhaps a package deal involving Irving and a young wing for Kawhi Leonard of the Spurs?

Kellen Winslow pleads not guilty, is held without bail

Former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II faces a laundry list of disturbing criminal charges arising from the actual or attempted rape of multiple older women. And he’ll remain in jail while he awaits trial.

Via 5newsonline.com, a judge deemed Winslow to be a danger to the public, ordering him to be held without bail.

Waithe was asked to expand on this idea of embracing disruption today at the Produced By Conference. She said she’s conscious of attracting stares when she enters a room — and that’s a good thing.

The things that make me different are also a commodity, Waithe said. Being brown. Being female. Having a different point of view. That’s something the industry can make money off of. I don’t write the ‘Thanksgiving’ episode if I’m not gay, black and female.

During an appearance on The Team 980, Brown said that coach Jay Gruden didn’t let defenders get physical with Pryor last year and noted that Gruden isn’t able to protect you anymore while warning Pryor away from trying to make highlight reel catches in practice sessions.

That’s going to be something right there, Brown said, via NBC Sports Washington. The boys are gonna have it out for him. We can put hands on him now. … The boys were already hot for what he was doing last year. Try to one-hand something while you’re with the Jets, you’re gonna catch a forearm.

Pryor didn’t get in any work during OTAs or minicamp as he recovered from a surgery related to the ankle injury that brought his lone season in Washington to an early end. He declared himself healthy and ready to go for camp at the end of last week, so it seems Brown and company are on track for their shot to take shots at the wideout.

Garrett advocated hard caps as a way to prevent super teams from forming, but also felt Durant’s pride should have been enough to stop him from going to Golden State.

DeMarco Murray passed on chance to work out for Saints

DeMarco Murray is still looking for work, but he’s apparently not interested in being a temp.

The Wonderlic might ask: ‘What’s one-half of one-fourth?’ What we want to know is: ‘How does someone scan the playing field and look for the most relevant details?’ We felt that kind of identification for details was of greater importance.

Bowman earned his master’s degree in psychology from St. John’s University and has been licensed in New York since 2007, working extensively with children and adolescents. Goldman, who earned his masters and doctorate degrees in clinical and school psychology from Hofstra, is the director of performance psychology at Michigan. They began developing the test in 1998 after wondering why quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf were viewed as near equals going into the NFL draft but had such drastically different NFL careers.

Yes, it came on a track and not on a field. Sure, it was hand timed. Still, the guy is 44-year-old. So the bottom line is that T.O. can still move, eight years after he last played.

He has wanted for years to get back in to the NFL, but there has been no interest in his services. That likely won’t be changing, regardless of how fast he can still run.

The new Madden game comes out in August and, to little surprise, the new Super Bowl champions to little surprise have the highest rating in the game.

Via the Sunday Night Football Twitter account, the Eagles have a 90 rating as a team. That’s six points higher than the Patriots, who come in second at 84.

The Falcons, Steelers, and Saints each rate an 83, and the Vikings and Jaguars come in at 82.

The Cowboys, Titans, and Raiders triggered an 81, and the Rams surprisingly register an 80, along with the Seahawks and Chiefs.

At the bottom of the barrel are the Jets, at 72.

The Giants would be foolish to push their two best players in June.

Sooner or later, Beckham may take a look around the league and wonder if the Giants are playing him like a fool. He’s doing everything Shurmur and the coaches and team brass have asked of him this offseason, including Tuesday when he participated in individual drills and and took part in the walk-through portions of practice in addition to attending all meetings.

At some point between the start of training camp in late July and Week 1 at home against Jacksonville, Beckham’s representatives and the Giants owe it to themselves to seriously engage in talks about a new deal.

Truth is, Beckham and the Giants have every reason to make this work before we ever get to that. It’s why Beckham is doing everything asked of him, giving himself the chance to earn that pay day he has earned.

And that’s a fact everyone should be able to agree on.

Dykstra’s attorney, Matthew Blit, has said Dykstra has the 911 call records to prove that he was actually a terrified victim of kidnapping, as his driver refused to let him out of the car and drove like a maniac.

Trump initially picked the fight with the NFL last September in Huntsville, Ala., by suggesting that NFL owners fire athletes who don’t stand for the national anthem. The following month, Vice President Mike Pence walked out of an Indianapolis Colts game when members of the visiting San Francisco 49ers kneeled during the anthem.

He also criticized the NFL’s policy of allowing players to stay in the locker room before a game but requiring them to stand for the anthem if they appear on the field, calling it as disrespectful to our country as kneeling.

Smith later posted a second tweet that read: There are a lot of people on the team that have plenty of different views. The men and women that wanted to go should’ve been able to go. It’s a cowardly act to cancel the celebration because the majority of the people don’t want to see you. To make it about the anthem is foolish.

Smith also recently became one of the first NFL players to respond on social media about the league’s new national anthem policy. The receiver suggested the league didn’t address the intent of Colin Kaepernick’s protest.

Duane Brown not focused on contract situation with Seahawks

Duane Brown held out for the first six weeks of the 2017 season in hopes of leveraging a new contract from the Houston Texans.

While a new contract never developed in Houston, Brown was eventually traded to the Seattle Seahawks in October. He started the final nine games of the year for Seattle and appeared in the Pro Bowl as an alternate last January.

Walls was a great player who was a Hall of Fame finalist this year. He deserves to be remembered for a lot more than just being on the wrong end of a historic play, but Walls knows that if he had to get beaten for a big catch, it was good to get beaten by a man like Dwight Clark.

And the players may continue, regardless of whether the NFL continues to act like it’s in the middle of a minefield, without realizing that the bombs will keep going off even if the NFL keeps perfectly still.

You’re learning a new offense and going up against the best competition possible. So, yeah, there’s been a learning curve. But I’ve made some strides within the past week of practice that I’m proud of, and that’s all I can continue to do is keep striving and make a couple more.

Mayfield’s had to adjust to the simple things like taking snaps from center, and whether the Browns want to acknowledge it or not, passing over Stanton seems like a reasonably relevant development.

Which makes sense, given that Gase once worked for Saban.

After the draft, Gase addressed the decision to draft Fitzpatrick, among other things. And Gase surely knows Saban well enough to realize that, if Saban feels strongly enough about Fitzpatrick to heap that kind of praise on him, Fitzpatrick may be the real deal.

Yankees hoping schedule beef with ESPN resolves without boycott

Yankees player rep David Robertson isn’t looking for a compromise with ESPN and Major League Baseball in an unwanted schedule change that would force his club to play three games in 24 hours.

He went there [to the Patriots] for a training camp and retired. S-is not fun there. I was under the same regime in Houston [with O’Brien]. I almost retired. S-was miserable, every day. Every day.Johnson added: All these guys talking about ‘I’ll take the rings.’ OK. You can have your rings. You can also have f—-15 miserable years. But Shea McClellin, who spent 2016 and 2017 in New England after playing his first four NFL seasons with the Bears, called his experiences on a Belichick-coached team the best two years of my football career that I’ve had.

The Warriors are trying to join Bill Russell’s Celtics, the Bulls led by Michael Jordan and the Lakers’ trio of title runs fueled by George Mikan in the 1950s, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the ’80s, and Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant nearly 20 years ago as the only franchises in NBA history to capture three championships in four years.

The Warriors are halfway there, holding a 2-0 lead against the underdog Cavs as the series shifts to Cleveland for Game 3 on Wednesday.

Listen, Golden State is one of the best teams I’ve ever played. It’s one of the best teams that’s ever been assembled, said James, who is playing in his eighth straight NBA Finals and fourth in a row against Golden State.

Curry, sharp-shooting Klay Thompson, fiery Draymond Green and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala make up an All-Star-studded squad trying to repeat after James thwarted that quest two years ago when the Cavs stopped the defending champs. Kevin Durant bolted from Oklahoma City to join the cast last season.

The Brewers are 1-8 this season against their division rivals, and on Monday they lost a game in which Hader pitched for the first time this season (21-1).

jets_004Heyward beating Hader was as unlikely an outcome as any you’ll see — or at least that was the case with the old Heyward. The new, handsy one is a different hitter.

Timing is good, but when you use your hands, you don’t get body involved, and [I] can adjust mid at-bat and throw my hands at the baseball, he said. Trying to use my hands. After that, just able to focus on who you’re facing on the mound.

His teammates know what Heyward has been through and can appreciate the way he keeps working in the face of adversity. It doesn’t matter if it lasts. It’s happening now, and it’s helping the Cubs win.

In April of this year, the team announced it would be the first NFL franchise with a dog park at home games.

Smorol and the Chiefs tried this themselves last season, when they played one game as the Syracuse Salt Potatoes, a reference to a tasty specialty first popularized by Irish immigrants working in Syracuse’s salt mines during the 1800s. It’s the most successful thing we’ve ever done, says Smorol. We knew it would be fun, but we had no idea it would take off nationally, or even internationally, where we’re shipping Salt Potatoes caps to other countries. People were coming in and saying, ‘I have a brother who’s from Syracuse, but he lives in Colorado now and he misses salt potatoes.’

It’s not clear whether Syracusans feel a similar connection to the Brannock Device (some admittedly unscientific polling suggests that many of the city’s residents don’t even realize the device is a local product), but Smorol wanted to honor it this season anyway. He had decided over the winter to run a series of promotions honoring the heritage and culture of Central New York, and the Brannock fit right in.

The whole staff thought I was crazy, he says. It was like, ‘Brannock Device Night, what are you even talking about?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know what it’ll actually entail, but we’ll figure it out.’ Initially I thought of it as kind of a throwaway day, so we didn’t talk to the Brannock company or anything, because it was just going to be a salute to this object. We had no plans to do anything on the field with our uniforms.

Jazz mostly laughs and smiles and bounces around all game as his dreads flop in the wind.

jets_006Make a play! Make a play!

One ball whistles past Jazz at a speed difficult for someone twice his age to glove, and Lewis snipes instantly, Get in front of it!Never mind that Lewis admits he never played baseball himself because he was terrified of getting hit by the ball.

Super Bowl XLIX. Seahawks ball on New England’s 1-yard line. Twenty-five seconds left. Running back Marshawn Lynch in the backfield. Instead, a pass play, a brilliant read from the Patriots’ Malcolm Butler and an interception that some call the greatest play in NFL history and some call the worst.

As Tepper was finding his political voice, the NFL was beginning to lose the public’s confidence in its own.

After being released in April, Bryant expressed an interest in remaining in the NFC East. But the Eagles, Giants and Redskins have shown very little interest (at least publicly).

On Saturday, Bryant was asked on Instagram where he wants to sign. Bryant briefly responded, before deleting the posting:

The 49ers would be an interesting landing spot for Bryant.

They are set at quarterback with Jimmy Garoppolo, but could use some help at wide receiver. The top receivers on the 49ers roster are Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin and George Kittle. Not exactly a group which strikes fear in the hearts of NFL defenses.

Bryant remains the best available wide receiver on the open market, although how much he can boost a club remains in question. Bryant is a three-time Pro Bowler and was named an All-Pro in 2014. That was also the last season he had more than 1,000 yards receiving. The 29-year-old Bryant played in all 16 games last season for the Cowboys, finishing with 69 receptions for 838 yards and six touchdowns.
